Description

Martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steels are used as tooling material especially for injection molding of corrosive plastics due to their excellent corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties. The additive manufacturing of tools is gaining attention in tool repair, and it has the potential to be used for tool production. The investigation of laser metal deposited martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel is nevertheless very limited. It is expected that the thermal history associated with the laser metal deposition process determines the resulting microstructure and properties of the deposited martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel. However, monitoring the thermal cycles in the laser metal deposition process is complex and still an open subject. In this work, an experimental setup including the placement of thermocouples at different depth levels in the substrate was used. Representative thermal cycles related to the deposition of successive layers were successfully monitored. The final position of the thermocouples was established and related to the local microstructure.
