Mechanical wear is responsible for obsolescence of mechanical parts due its geometrical changes. Tooling is directed affected by wear and its generated costs have a huge impact over manufacturing final prices. Manufactory processes like high pressure die casting (HPDC) lies on the die geometry to acquire the requested dimensional precision and surface quality. A usual way for overcoming wear processes is by additive manufacturing. However, additive processes usually induce some defects that lead the final surface not to have the same properties as before. Problems like porosity, cracks and composition modification are frequently faced for whom tries to apply these techniques. Nonetheless, other non-additive processes may be used to enhance surface properties. The nitriding of steels through different processes are well established to significantly improve their mechanical properties, preserving or even increasing the inherent corrosion resistance of the material. Such improvements are mainly due to the formation of a surface layer with expanded phase (nitrogen expanded martensite, α_N^'), a result of the nitrogen inlet and accommodation in the crystalline lattice of the martensite structure. However, the α_N^' is metastable and begins to decay into chromium and iron nitrides, depending on their thermodynamic condition, where the temperature at which the activation energy is achieved. In general, these parts are subjected to high pressures and temperatures, and the objective is to evaluate the final characteristics of the coating wear and compare to bulk material and the improvements generate by nitriding.
